Treasury Issued Advice

I’ve learned a little something.

If you’re lusting after something splurge-y on the internet for months and months on end – it can be helpful, instead of waiting and saving and debating and wondering endlessly, rather to just go ahead and order the particular item near the get go.

Once your potential treasure arrives, and you see it with your naked non-web-filtered eyes, you may find you don’t even want the object of your imagined affection any longer and can then focus your funds and your lust on something surer.

I’ve been wanting a Dark Tan Steamer Bag from BillyKirk since February. One finally FedEx-ed its way into my life last week and now, after seven months of anticipation, I’m not sure I’ll keep it.

I still get a kick out of its steel-framed, Doctor’s bag construction and it’s Packard Saw Mill style. But what looked actually Dark Tan AKA Khaki on-line, in person, is Darker than Dark, and Basically Brown.

For three hundred dollars I feel I need to love absolutely every aspect of my bag. And right now, I’m not sure that I do.

So I’m just not sure what I should do.

I offered y’all a little advice, so now send some my way, if you can.

I suggest returning it while you still can if you are not 100% satisfied. Just promise yourself that the money will definitely go back into the chequing account not savings!!

If you aren’t infatuated with it, and sounds like you’re not, that’s a little too much money to settle for less than your expectations.

I agree. Return it. I’m interested to know why you wanted it so much in the first place. It’s a nice bag but what motivated you in the first place? Was it supposed t be part of an overall look? A day to day bag? A Journey?

    Damien-
I wanted it so much because of the steel-frame structure. I considered cheaper alternatives – like masonry or tool bags but they seemed too white, or too literal. It was gonna be my day to day bag. I don’t always dress so lumberjack-y, and the photos of the bag in khaki not so dark and brown made it also not seem so lumberjack-y. In fact the bag would probably look best paired with a slightly dressier or preppier outfit.

Technically that’s a mason’s bag. Doctors bags are shaped differently and typically made of 100% leather. You can get one just like the one pictured (leather accents and all) at Harbor Freight Tools for about $20.00.

    Here’s my friendly advice…

Return the bag. You’re absolutely right, you have to love it at that price point. I would also advise you to keep up the good work. I like your site. And lastly, check out the Property Of Tom Work Bag in Cotton Waxcloth… http://www.blackbirdballard.com/Property_Of_Tom_Work_Bag_Cotton_Waxcloth_12741.html

I love mine. It has a hint of carpenter/tool bag that can go lumberjacky or Eastern Seaboard Prep.

    Good luck,

    E

I have looked at real masonry bags at various online Hardware Stores but the leather involved always seems cheap – I’ll check out the Harbor Freight Tools tip. Thanks for the heads up!

Coles, I like that Property Of bag too. In fact I was just at a shop today where I saw it in person, but in black – which wasn’t as striking as the green.

What are the chances. I know, the black just doesn’t sing like the green.
